Make Power BI a success within your organisation

Introduction

The Semantic Model Package, however, can also contain the data itself; when this happens, the model size can be increased to 1GB for Pro or larger with Premium options. Most people build these semantic models within Power BI Desktop, which is the free Power BI Report Authoring Tool.

The semantic model holds the schema of the data model (and the data), which is only part of the whole Data Modelling Process. Before the schema can use data, it must be prepared; this part of the process is referred to by what takes place: Extract, Transform and Load or ETL. During ETL, data is Extracted from the source system, transformed into a format fit for analysis and then loaded into a structure that the semantic model can process.

A well-defined data modelling process serves as a blueprint for data collection, storage, and retrieval. It ensures that data is organised logically, with clear relationships and constraints. Data Modelling is a process; however, because it is never finished, it must continue to be optimised, adapted, and changed with the business’s needs. This consistent methodology makes it possible to reduce redundancy and minimise errors, leading to higher data quality. This is called Continuous Improvement or Continual Service Improvement, depending on who you speak to. We will revisit this concept in another article.
